[Smells Like News] 'American Idol' Finale: Phillip Phillips Vs. Jessica Sanchez

Joshua Ledet just misses out on the big showdown.
By Adam Graham

The "American Idol" finale is set, and Joshua Ledet didn't get an invite.

Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez will compete in next week's season finale after Ledet was voted off the show Thursday (May 17). Ledet, the 20-year-old from Westlake, Louisiana, who was continually praised as one of the best contestants to ever grace the "Idol" stage, received the lowest number of votes from the 90 million votes cast, according to "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest.

Ledet set a record for standing ovations from the judges this season on "Idol"; barely a week went by when he didn't get the judges on their feet after one of his stellar performances. Ledet performed James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" at the close of the show Thursday, repeating a song that became one of his signature moments.

Show mentor Jimmy Iovine took partial blame for Ledet's performance Wednesday, saying by choosing Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama," he didn't give him a song with enough of a melody to captivate the audience and generate votes. "There was something missing, and I know it was the material. In fairness, I gave him a song that didn't have enough melody. Joshua needs melody, [and] I take 100 percent responsibility for that," Iovine said.

Still, he thought Ledet deserved to compete for the "Idol" crown next week. "Does Joshua belong in this finale? 100 percent, he should be in anyone's finale," he said.

Ledet's elimination gives Sanchez a shot at being the first female "Idol" winner since Jordin Sparks back in season six. At the onset of the season, it was said to be the women's year on "Idol," and four of the top six contestants were female. But three women were picked off in a row — Elise Testone, then Skylar Laine, then Hollie Cavanagh — threatening the show's girl-power contingent. Now Sanchez is carrying the torch for the ladies.

Iovine, in summing up Wednesday's performances, also blamed himself for picking a bad song for Sanchez, but said Phillips won the night with his version of Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight." "Hands down, it was the best performance he's done in the entire contest," he said, calling it "flawless." (In fairness, Iovine also said Phillips' version of Matchbox Twenty's "Disease" was "a total snooze-fest."

Regarding Sanchez, Iovine said, "She has to have the most magical moment she's had so far" in order to win it all. "If she gets in the finale," he said, "It's about the songs."

Before Ledet's elimination, Jackson said the final contestants were "three of the best we've ever had" and said all three have "big careers" ahead of them.

Also on Thursday's show, Adam Lambert dropped by to perform "Never Close Our Eyes," and Lisa Marie Presley (huh?) performed her new single "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet."

What did you think of "Idol" on Thursday? Did the right contestants make the finale? Let us know in the comments!

[Smells Like News] Bobby Brown Says Goodbye To Whitney Houston On New Song

Houston's ex-husband debuts 'Don't Let Me Die' during a visit to the 'The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.'

Since Whitney Houston passed away in February, her ex-husband, Bobby Brown, has only opened up about her death in one interview on the "Today" show, but during a Wednesday night appearance on the "Tonight Show With Jay Leno," the R&B singer paid tribute to Houston with a new song.

"Don't Let Me Die" finds Brown musing on mistakes he made during his relationship with Houston. "I didn't realize that every breath I took was from you," he sang, dressed in black, "You were my air."

The new song will be featured on Brown's upcoming album The Masterpiece, set to debut on June 5. It will be his first album since 1997's Forever. "I guess I [messed] up pretty bad/ I didn't know who you were/ I didn't know what we had," Brown continued to sing. "Now I'm stuck living in the past/ Trying to get the pieces back/ But I guess now you're gone."

Brown's tumultuous marriage to Houston was well-documented on their reality TV series "Being Bobby Brown," which showed the couple's difficult battle with drugs. When Houston died, she left behind 19-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina, who reportedly has a strained relationship with her dad.

During his visit to the "Today" show in April, Brown defended himself against constant accusations that he was responsible for Houston's drug use, saying she was using drugs before they met in 1991. "I smoked weed, I drank the beer, but no, I wasn't the one that got Whitney on drugs at all," Brown told "Today" host Matt Lauer."It's just, it's just unexplainable, how one could [say that I] got her addicted to drugs. I'm not the reason she's gone."

Houston's family — including daughter Bobbi Kristina, brother Gary Houston and sister-in-law Patricia Houston — are set to appear in an upcoming Lifetime reality series.

[Smells Like News] Eduardo Saverin, Facebook Co-Founder, Renounces U.S. Citizenship in Advance of IPO

Eduardo Saverin, the billionaire Facebook co-founder portrayed by Andrew Garfield in The Social Network, is no longer an American citizen.

Saverin, 30, renounced the U.S. citizenship he gained as a teenager in advance of the company's impending IPO, a move met with criticism.

He's accused of trying to skip out on taxes with the move, though the Brazilian-born resident of Singapore has done nothing illegal at any point.

Saverin

Eduardo Saverin co-founded Facebook at age 21, was forced out two years later, sued CEO Mark Zuckerberg and ultimately settled out of court.

He was given a share of the company that left him phenomenally wealthy.

His stake, 4 percent of the company, will most likely be worth more than $3 billion when Facebook goes public Friday. Hence his exit now.

Saverin joins a growing number of people giving up U.S. citizenship, a move that can trim their tax liabilities when residing in lower-tax nations.

Said Tom Goodman, a spokesman for Saverin, in an e-mailed statement:

“Eduardo recently found it more practical to become a resident of Singapore since he plans to live there for an indefinite period of time.”

He professes ignorance about his taxes and refuses to discuss his finances.

“This had nothing to do with taxes,” he insisted. “I was born in Brazil, I was a U.S. citizen for about 10 years. I thought of myself as a global citizen.”

Saverin renounced U.S. citizenship “around September”, according to his spokesman.

Singapore doesn’t have a capital gains tax. It does tax income earned in that nation, as well as “certain foreign- sourced income,” according to reports.

Saverin won’t escape all U.S. taxes. Americans who give up their citizenship owe what is effectively an exit tax on the capital gains from stock holdings.

Renouncing your citizenship in advance of an IPO is “a very smart idea,” said one expert, “Once it’s public you can’t fool around with the value.”

Saverin’s decision to leave could have been a wager that the cost of an exit tax now - 15 percent of whatever valuation he could get the IRS to agree to - would be far less than the 35 percent or more in estate tax his heirs would face.

[Smells Like News] T.I. And Young Jeezy Have 'Records Already In The Can'

'Between the two of us, we probably got five or six records,' T.I. tells 'RapFix Live' about possible joint album with Jeezy.

After the success of Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne, fans are excited at the thought of two favorite MCs working in tandem. There's been talk of a Lil Wayne and Drake LP, a Rick Ross and Drake mixtape, and whispers of a T.I. and Young Jeezy full-length collaboration. We haven't received any updates from Wayne, Drake or Rozay in a minute, but Tip says he and the Snowman already have songs in the stash.

"I got a few albums that I'm workin' on: the Man and the Martian project with B.o.B; me and Jeezy been talkin' about doin' this project for a minute," T.I. told Sway when he held court on "RapFix Live" on Wednesday. "It wouldn't take us long to do. We got records already in the can and it don't take us no time to put it together. It's just a matter of when they would be released."

Right now Tip is focused on Trouble Man, his eighth solo album, which is slated for a September 4 release. Then there is the tag-team LP with B.o.B — considering that Bobby Ray is signed to T.I.'s Grand Hustle label, the pair's Man and the Martian album is more than a fantasy project.

When it comes to a project with Jeezy, the King of the South says that the studio work isn't the problem: Getting the album out in stores is the tricky part. "It's not the recording, the recording is easy. It's a matter of when we would have time to market and promote 'em and release 'em," T.I. said. "We got maybe 30 or 40 [percent done]. Between the two of us, we probably got five or six records."

How interested are you in a T.I. and Young Jeezy project? Let us know in the comments!

[Smells Like News] Donna Summer Calls Singing 'The Greatest Gift' In 1989

'Sometimes you can't communicate in words, but in a song, you can,' late Queen of Disco told MTV News in a rare interview.
By John Mitchell, with additional reporting by John Norris

Donna Summer
Photo: MTV News

Donna Summer's death Thursday (May 17) at age 63 after a long battle with cancer saddened music lovers around the world. Fans are mourning the loss of one of the greats, a real pioneer, whose innovative use of synthesized backing tracks blazed the path for the dance music we are all so familiar with today.

Hers are some of the most memorable disco songs ever recorded, and her impact on music is almost too large to quantify with words, but for Summer herself, it was all about the voice.

"Music is part of my life. For my judgment, music is the greatest of all the gifts," Summer told MTV News' John Norris in a rare 1989 interview. "The voice — not my voice, but the voice — to me is the greatest gift. Having a voice. You need no other instrument, all you have to do is sing. Open your mouth, and there it is."

Because her sound was so rooted in the mechanics of disco, with its glittering synths and pulsating beats, some people don't know that the five-time Grammy winner was also an amazingly accomplished vocalist. Her mezzo-soprano voice transcends even the genre she pioneered. Before she became the Queen of Disco, she sang gospel in church and in her early 20s moved to Europe, where she performed in musicals like "Godspell" and "Showboat" and joined the Viennese Folk Opera.

"When I hear other people singing, I think, 'God, it's great, it's a great gift, what a great gift,' " Summer told MTV News. "And probably one of the gifts that people want the most is to be able to sing, and for obvious reasons — it's soothing, it's stimulating, it's encouraging, it's sad, it covers every spectrum of emotion."

It was a gift she was lucky enough to have and good enough to share with the world — one that brought her 14 top 10 hits and four #1's.

"There's no better way to get into those crevasses, those cracks in somebody's personality and root out the real person but through singing," Summer continued. "Sometimes you can't communicate in words, but in a song, you can."

Share your condolences for Donna Summer's friends, family and fans in the comments or on Facebook.

[Smells Like News] Adam Yauch Honored By New York State Senate

The late Beastie Boy's legacy is remembered in resolution that celebrates his life, music and love for New York City.
By James Montgomery

Photo: Bertrand Guay/ Getty Images

Adam Yauch was, in almost every sense of the term, a true New Yorker — born in Brooklyn, raised on the music of the Village and the Lower East Side, representing the eclectic energy and vibrant multiculturalism of NYC itself through his films and social causes — so it's fitting that, earlier this week, the New York State Senate passed a resolution honoring the late Beastie Boy's achievements.

The resolution — officially known as J4637 — was written by State Senator Daniel Squadron (who represents the district of Brooklyn Heights, where Yauch was born) and celebrates Yauch's many accomplishments and contributions, including raising the profile of New York City in a time when many thought its best days were behind it, noting:

"The Beastie Boys became well-known in the innovative music scene in Manhattan's East Village and Lower East Side with a sound and a style all their own ... [they] exemplified New York through a period in which grassroots creativity and a community of iconoclastic artists helped redefine and rejuvenate a city on the ropes, with iconic imagery from Brooklyn to Ludlow Street."

Squadron also paid tribute to Yauch's activism, including his Milarepa Fund (which raised awareness of the abuses in Tibet) and his Oscilloscope Laboratories, which produced films like the Yauch-directed "Gunnin' For That #1 Spot," about high-school basketball prospects competing in a tournament at Harlem's historic Rucker Park.

J4637 also works in a nod to the Beastie's 1994 hit "Sure Shot" ("The music and message of the Beastie Boys evolved over the years, but they can't, they don't, they won't stop changing the face of hip-hop, of music and of our culture") and allowed the Senate to "pause in its deliberations" to remember Yauch, "a man of colossal talent and charisma."

"Adam Yauch is survived by his wife, Dechen Wengdu, and their daughter Losel," the resolution concludes. "He will be missed by his family, his fans and all who knew him; his dedication to his music, his activism and his heritage leaves an indelible legacy of inspiration for all other artists."

[Smells Like News] 'Glee' Creator Confirms: Everyone Is Coming Back

'I wanted to do the right thing by all of them,' Ryan Murphy tells Vulture.
By Fallon Prinzivalli, with additional reporting by Christina Garibaldi

Twitter is a blessing that affords celebrities the ability to communicate with fans and update on their projects. But it can also be a curse when it sparks unwanted rumors — as "Glee" star Amber Riley found out the hard way.

Gleeks thought the actress wasn't returning to the show next fall when Riley tweeted, "Just closed a chapter in my life, the only thing I've known day in and day out for three years. I'm going to miss the whole Glee family, seeing them everyday!"

When the show's creator Ryan Murphy spoke to Vulture, he dispelled the gossip. "A lot of people have been writing Dianna [Agron] off the show, Amber's off the show — they're not off the show," he said. "I think Amber was talking about that bittersweet feeling of, 'I'll never be in the choir room with that exact group of people.' ... She's excited about where her character is going. They all are. I wanted to do the right thing by all of them."

MTV News caught up with Agron before the news broke that her character was returning. The actress told us that while she's interested in the future of Quinn, she likes the story line to be a surprise.

"It's so funny, because I do write, and there was part of me that was like, 'Oh, I know these characters inside and out. What if they gave me a shot to sit in the writer's room and toy away with that?' But at the same time, it's like, 'I don't want to have any say in that.' I love the surprise element of it."

While fans need not worry about the fate of Lea Michele, Cory Monteith or Chris Colfer following reports that the show will track Rachel, Finn and Kurt's New York adventures, it's hard not to wonder what's in store for the glee-club seniors as they graduate on the season finale. With Quinn (Agron) off to Yale and Puck (Mark Salling) headed to California to expand his pool-cleaning business, some characters could get tossed to the side. But Murphy said that he told the actors if they wanted to stay on the show, he had a place for them — including Matthew Morrison's Will Schuester and Jane Lynch's Coach Sue Sylvester. "They're all coming back," he said. "Anyone who is a regular is coming back. Everyone said yes."

But he does clarify that they may not come back for the long haul. "It doesn't mean everyone will be doing 22 episodes, but everyone wants to stay in our family and our world,'" he revealed. "I wanted to make sure those actors know that if they want to have a home, they have a home. If they want to explore new and different things while also having a home, that is also an option."

"Glee" returns to Fox this fall, moving from Tuesday to Thursday nights, and is set to begin season four with a second Britney Spears tribute episode.

[Smells Like News] Guinness World Records Responds To Jack White's 'Elitist' Claims

Guinness spokesperson explains why they refused to recognize a White Stripes show as 'the shortest concert of all time.'
By James Montgomery

Jack White
Photo: WireImage

Over the years, Jack White has taken umbrage with overzealous radio programmers, the Internet and, uh, Jason Stollsteimer (to name just a few) but in the new issue of Interview magazine, he lashes out at a new foe: The folks at Guinness World Records.

Yes, in what could only be described as the latest step in his ongoing transformation into the music world's foremost eccentric — sorry, Kanye — White has lashed out at the venerable record-keeping institution, calling them "a very elitist organization" after they refused to acknowledge the White Stripes' one-note performance in Newfoundland (seen in their 2010 doc "Under Great White Northern Lights") as "the shortest music concert ever."

"I was thinking that afterwards we could contact the Guinness World Records people and see if we could get the record for the shortest concert of all time. So we did it, but ultimately, they turned us down," White tells astronaut Buzz Aldrin (for real) in the Interview piece. "[They're] a very elitist organization. There's nothing scientific about what they do. They just have an office full of people who decide what is a record and what isn't ... so something like the shortest concert of all time, they didn't think [it] was interesting enough to make it a record. I don't know why they get to decide that, but, you know, they own the book."

Well, yes, they do own the book ... and, as it turns out, the Stripes' Newfoundland concert was featured in the 2009 edition of it, as a spokesperson for Guinness World Records pointed out to MTV News on Thursday (May 17). Of course, they'd subsequently remove the notation in later editions, though it had little to do with elitism and more to do with the simple fact that Guinness had no way of qualifying what actually counted as a performance.

"We received a large volume of applications from bands and performers seeking to beat this record. We got an influx of individuals claiming that simply appearing on stage was enough to qualify them for this record," the spokesperson wrote in an email to MTV News. "It became increasingly difficult for us to measure this objectively (for example, how many members of the crowd need to be able to see the performer before they disappear off stage?)

"The nature of competing to make something the 'shortest' by its very nature trivializes the activity being carried out, and Guinness World Records has been forced to reject many claims of this kind," the spokesperson continued. "As such, we have closed record categories for similar designations such as the shortest song, shortest poem, and also the record of shortest concert currently in question."

Of course, the spokesperson was quick to add that Guinness World Records "admires the band and we encourage them to attempt any of the 40,000 active records currently housed in our database." And knowing White, we're pretty sure he'll take them up on that offer. Soon.

[Smells Like News] 'Hunger Games' At The Movie Awards: Dos And Don'ts

In this week's Hobnobbing, we offer advice for the franchise's first outing at the big show!
By Amy Wilkinson

Jennifer Lawrence in "Hunger Games"
Photo: Lionsgate

Come June 3, "The Hunger Games" will enter a brand-new arena: the 2012 MTV Movie Awards. And this is one fiery debut for the film franchise, with eight nominations, including Movie of the Year, Best Cast, Best Female Lead (Jennifer Lawrence), Best Male Performance (Josh Hutcherson), Breakthrough Performance (Liam Hemsworth), Best On-Screen Transformation (Elizabeth Banks), Best Fight (Lawrence and Hutcherson vs. Alexander Ludgwig), and Best Kiss (Lawrence and Hutcherson).

Yep, clearly the kind of credentials that would make any sponsor drool.

Much like the titular death match, the Movie Awards can be a contentious battle, with franchise facing off against franchise, so preparation is key. In this week's Hobnobbing, we're taking on the role of mentor (step aside, Haymitch!) and offering some advice to the tributes. Here are our dos and don'ts for the big night:

DO Dress to Impress Effie
If there's one place to let your fashion freak flag fly, it's most certainly at an MTV awards show. (Am I right, Rose McGowan?) Of course, I'm not encouraging any tribute-tushy flashing or donning of flame-licked jumpsuits (such a fire hazard!), but this is a safe space to experiment with fanciful motifs and pieces of flair. For instance, I could see Lawrence sporting a shorter, cropped version of her red, orange and yellow interview dress, or Banks working her sky-high Effie heels.

DON'T Tease Us
Full disclosure: I personally think "Twilight" co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are a lock for a fourth Best Kiss statuette, but if the odds are indeed in Lawrence and Hutcherson's favor and they're named victors, I respectfully ask that they give us a show. None of this we-almost-maybe-kinda-sorta-kissed business. If you need some inspiration, Jennifer and Josh, take a page out of Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams' "Notebook."

DO Bring Your Bow and Arrow
The Movie Awards have a storied history of spoofery, and while I have no insider information as to what's in the works, Lawrence (if in attendance) would be wise to pack her trusty weapon. You never know when it will come in handy for a giggle-worthy gag! (Is this where I put in my request for Lawrence to shoot an apple off of Josh Horowitz's head?)

DON'T Drop Your Golden Popcorn
'Nuff said.

DO Bring News About "Catching Fire"
We're getting really hungry here, guys. Any scraps about the November 2013 release would be much appreciated. (Seriously, we'll retrieve them from a pile of slop and devour them. We're not proud!)

Do you have any Movie Awards advice for the "Hunger Games" gang? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @amymwilk with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!

[Smells Like News] Carrie Underwood: Ready to Take 'Blown Away' On The Road

She's riding high as her fourth album 'Blown Away' is perched atop the Billboard charts, and now Carrie Underwood is readying to embark on the first dates of the disc's accompanying tour - which runs through the end of 2012.

The 29-year-old country cutie recently spoke with "On Air with Ryan Seacrest" about her new music and hitting the road, as she dished about her single â€Å“Forever Changed' by saying, â€Å“It’s set in another time. It’s another one that you can see this movie play out as you listen to the song. It’s definitely one…I’ve been talking about it so much, because I think it’s one of the best well written songs I’ve ever heard in my life. So I’m amazed that I got my hands on it, but I am worried that me talking about it as much as I have been…I don’t want it to be a single, because I can’t sing it! I can’t do it! I’ve never been able to listen to it or sing it and actually get through the whole thing.â€

Of her album as a whole, Miss Underwood explained, â€Å“There’s really no particular theme. A lot of the songs are very visual, but in different ways. It’s kind of a roller coaster, and I think I pushed things in a lot of different directions. We got a little bit darker, and a little bit lighter. I sing songs that are a little more traditional country than I’ve every done before. So…I’m a little schizo…when it comes to making an album. In a good way, because I think there's something for everyone.â€

As for her tour, the "American Idol" alumna will be making a stop at LSU Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge on May 26th followed by two June shows in Tennessee before heading overseas for a single UK concert and a string of Australian appearances.

Giving herself a little over a month off to build up her energy, Carrie's main U.S. tour kicks off on September 14th in New Hampshire with the complete rundown of scheduled gigs running through December being as follows:

While Donna Summer was the Queen of Disco, performers and entertainers from all genres reacted to the news of her death Thursday (May 17) with great sadness, noting how much she had impacted the music world as a whole before she died from cancer at age 63.

Music mogul and onetime Summer producer Quincy Jones, who worked with the singer during her Donna Summer era, remembered her on Twitter: ‏"Rest in Peace dear Donna Summer. Your voice was the heartbeat and soundtrack of a decade."

Frequent Summer collaborator, producer and musician Nile Rodgers, remembered his pal, writing, ‏"This may help you understand why i'm still crying. So much love and RESPECT for Donna Summer RIP."

R&B diva Mary J. Blige paid homage to her soul sister on Twitter, posting, "RIP Donna Summers!!!!!!!!! You were truly a game changer!!!"

Former Destiny's Child singer Michelle Williams was also floored by the unexpected and tragic passing of the dance-floor icon. "Shocked and saddened at the news of Donna Summer passing away! "she wrote. "Wow!"

Her fellow DC sister, Kelly Rowland, added, "Donna Summer. Icon! Legend! Her voice! Her spirit! Rest In peace, you truly inspired me! I love you!"

Rihanna seemed so surprised by the news, she simply tweeted, "Donna Summer??"

"Donna Summer RIP I FEEL LOVE FOR YOU," Swedish pop princess Robyn tweeted. Mirroring that sentiment, Adam Lambert wrote, "RIP Donna Summer. glorious disco Goddess."

British pop songstress Kylie Minogue, whose own flashy, dance-heavy career can be traced back to Summer's influence, wrote,‏ "One of my earliest musical inspirations, RIP Donna Summer #BadGirlsForEver."

Q-Tip to the number of icons who have died already in 2012. "I'm getting tired of these 3 keys...RIP this time to Donna summer an amazing trailblazer!"

Boyz II Men also had a similar reaction on their Twitter: "It's unfortunate that we have to say goodbye to another amazing talent. Donna Summer, Queen of Disco, our condolences to her family!"

"I remember sitting in the front seat of my mom's toyota while she sang Donna Summer's 'she works hard for the money,' " Ryan Seacrest recalled. "Songs were just classic."

Fellow TV personality Carson Daly sent his condolences to her family. "We lost the Queen of Disco today, Donna Summer, 63- another victim of that bastard, cancer. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family."

"In Living Color" actor Tommy Davidson sent MTV News a statement about the singer's passing: "Donna Summer used disco to bring the most unlikely people together -- blacks, whites & everyone in between. Donna was a role model, the consummate professional. Her guidance and inspiration will forever help me reach new heights as a performer. I cherish the days I toured with her. Love to love you, baby."

Other Hollywood folks remembered Summer, including Kevin Smith. "Damn... donna summer dies at 63. An unforgettable voice from my childhood, beloved by my Mom & brother," he tweeted. "Let's dance the last dance for her."

[Smells Like News] John Mayer Proud Of 'Giant Evolutionary Steps' On Born And Raised

At intimate New York listening party, singer says new album 'widened the expectations of what I can do.'
By Jocelyn Vena

NEW YORK — Fans and industry folks gathered at the famed Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village on Wednesday night to get an advanced listen to John Mayer's new album, the country-fried, introspective Born and Raised.

Before the album even played, Neil Young songs blasted through the hallowed halls of the studio. Given Mayer's vibe on Born and Raised, which pays homage to the Young sound of the 1970s, it all made sense. When Mayer's album was eventually put on, it was an easy transition from Young's jangly guitar and harmonica to Mayer's own on the album, out Tuesday.

The album was recorded at Electric Lady Studios, and the Big Apple is referenced on some tracks, as on many Mayer songs before. "Records are pure reflections," Mayer told the room. "I'm so proud it's out. The finish line is so far off [when you're making the record]."

In recent years, Mayer has been through it all. After going TMI crazy in the press in 2010, he has shied away from media attention. Some of that had to do with the fact that he had surgery on his vocal cords in late 2011. In fact, he still needs to go through another surgery to correct the problem. But he said he plans to record a new album this summer, regardless.

"If you're lucky, you get to make giant evolutionary steps from your first record, so I was able to do that. And you guys, I think, you're able to come along with that step and be psyched about that evolution and I'm excited to even go further now and start coming up with melodies you haven't heard yet," he said, referencing his "Your Body Is a Wonderland" days on his 2001 debut, Room for Squares. During the chat he explained that every song on this album is his favorite, for perhaps the first time in his career, adding that they "widened the expectations of what I can do."

Additionally, after having to cancel his 2012 spring trek, Mayer confirmed he want to hit the road in spring 2013 "and have two records to pull from. ... I think I can cheat time a little bit because as you know, I try to cheat time all the time. So I think we can all catch up so that a year from now there's two records. It'll be like Born and Raised part two because there's certain things I want to keep doing."

[Smells Like News] Nicki Minaj 'A Very Obnoxious Person,' Lil' Kim Says

Kim describes origin of her beef with Nicki in interview on New York's Power 105.
By Rob Markman

Lil Kim
Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage

was very forthcoming during her interview with New York Power 105's Breakfast Club morning show on Thursday (May 17), especially about her feud with Nicki Minaj.

Before Kimmy Blanco began fielding questions from show hosts DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha God and Angela Yee, she questioned why media outlets don't grill Ms. Minaj like they do her. "She has a way of trying to avoid the situation, and y'all let her do it," Kim charged before she hit on the root of their issue.

According to the Queen Bee, she was on pace to sign with Cash Money, the same label that made Nicki a star. "Me and Slim were friends for four years, and we decided that we were going to go into business together," Kim said of her plans with CM co-CEO Ronald "Slim" Williams. "I was over there with Cash Money — I was getting ready to be partners with them."

The deal didn't go through, but Kim did record "Grinding Makin' Money," a track that included both Birdman and Minaj. The Notorious K.I.M. claims that the track was slated for Birdman's 2009 album Priceless but didn't make the final cut. "They put the record out. I guess they didn't like the response — they saw the response and they pulled the record off, pulled it back, never put it on his album, nothing," Kim said.

In the Big Momma's mind, the single was to be beneficial to all parties. For Nicki and Cash Money, doing a song with the female rap great would help stamp a then-budding Minaj. In addition, it would put Kim back into rotation at radio, an important step in restarting her career after she was released from federal prison in 2006. But Birdman and company went cold on the track. "If that would've been a big video and a big event record, that would've been big for both of us," Lil' Kim reasoned. "But I personally think they didn't want me to stand beside her, which is stupid."

Kim went on to claim that Nicki's new record "Automatic" is strikingly similar to an unreleased record of the same name that she recorded and played for Cash Money brass three years ago.

"On her new album, she has a song called 'Automatic,' and the song is so similar to the song that I played for Slim," Kim charged. "The problem with her is she was very catty with it. I never had a problem with her — I was always, always nice with her, always. She was a very obnoxious person, but I was always nice with her."

[Smells Like News] Taylor Swift Donates $4 Million For Music Education

Singer's donation to Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is second largest in Nashville museum's history.
By John Mitchell

Taylor Swift has a reputation for being a good girl with a big heart, and when you pair that with her sizable bank account, you get one very large charitable donation that will benefit music education for both children and senior citizens.

The six-time Grammy winner has donated $4 million to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville to fund what will now be known as the Taylor Swift Education Center, an exhibit and classroom space scheduled to open in 2014.

"In terms of what it will allow us to do, we do education very well now," museum director Kyle Young told the Associated Press (via Billboard). "It will allow us to do what we do better, serve more people, develop new programs, and I'm happy to say that as we talked through this opportunity with Taylor, she very much wants to be involved in an advisory capacity in what we do. Is there a better person out there who's in touch with a young audience? I think not. I was joking we should be paying her to do that. I was only joking."

Swift's donation is the second largest ever gifted to the museum and is the largest given by a musician. The country-pop megastar has a long history with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. She signed her record contract there and gave one of her first public performances on the building's plaza.

In the past, she has also volunteered her time to the museum's "All for the Hall" fundraisers.

The Taylor Swift Education Center is part of a larger $75 million expansion of the Hall of Fame that will more than double the size of the museum and include a new concert theater and more space for exhibits and archives.

The planned education center will be more than 7,500 square feet spread over two stories. It will have its own exterior entrance that will lead to three classrooms and exhibit space. The expansion will allow the museum to dramatically increase its youth education programs, with plans for it to house a "musical petting zoo" and an art classroom where children can make concert posters and other art projects.

The center will also give the museum the opportunity to add new programs and workshops for teens and senior citizens.

"For Taylor to want to engage herself in the life of this place in such an appropriate way," Young continued, "every way you slice it and dice it, it's great."

[Smells Like News] 'American Idol' Report Card: Joshua Ledet Brings 'Drama,' But Will Jessica Be 'There'?

Phillip Phillips gets mostly rave reviews and Joshua Ledet praised on path to what appears to be another all-male finale.
By Gil Kaufman

You can understand if the contestants on "American Idol" make some bad song choices when left to their own devices. But on Wednesday night's
triple-play episode, in which Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet had to sing a judge's choice, a tune picked by mentor Jimmy Iovine and one of their own, the selections were ... bizarre. With only two songs from the current millennium, the top three reached back, sometimes way back on a night when it became clear that Sanchez is too green, Ledet is just the right shade of blue(s) and Phillips is, well, whatever he wants to be because he's probably going to win no matter what happens.

So, who made it thisclose, but is probably headed home tonight and who can get their big boy pants pressed for the finale? Read on to find out!

Joshua Ledet: Randy Jackson picked the Etta James song "I'd Rather Be Blind" for Josh, who busted out the retro mic and some sleepy soul for a performance that simmered but took way too long to boil. It was solid, but even Jennifer Lopez seemed a tad bored with it and it didn't push him any closer to this century. (It was cute, though, how a Kraft commercial using THE SAME SONG aired right after Ledet performed. Synergy!)

Josh went big with his choice, John Lennon's "Imagine." And because he's a preacher's kid, he skipped the "no religion too" verse. The pageant-y, 1970s AM lite radio arrangement flattened out the song's emotion, which Ledet tried to pump back in courtesy of some swooping gospel moments. It was a heartstring-tugging layup, but if you really listened it sounded like coasting, or, as JLo politely deemed it, "pulled back and controlled."

Jimmy hit Josh in his sweet spot with Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama." Someone knows what they're doing. From the manic bouncing to the nearly out-of-control, bedazzled jacket-dropping spazz at the end, Josh murdered it. That alone made up for the other two tame performances and locked him into next week's finale. A-

Phillip Phillips: Steven Tyler was going for melody with "Beggin'" by Madcon. But what he likely did was send tens of millions of "Idol" watchers to Google to find out ... who the hell Madcon is? So, a 2008 cover of a 1967 Four Seasons hit by an obscure Norwegian dance duo? Wouldn't you know it, strummy P managed to make it sound like, oh man, do I even need to say it? (Rhymes with Shave It Bath Hues.) The jammy, vanilla soul frat party rocker is exactly what I expect a P Phil album to sound like. "New Springsteen?" Really Steven?

The sexy sax player was back for Phil's choice, "Disease" by Matchbox 20. Yeah, that Matchbox 20. It was moody, conga-y, mid-tempo and so intense he had to sit down on some road cases just to contain the, um, intensity? Like Ledet's "Imagine," this one felt too easy, like a sprinter pulling up in the final 20 yards to avoid injury after looking over his shoulder and realizing he's got it. In a rare bit of real talk from the panel, Lopez called it "easy flowing" and said it lacked the "wow performance" element.

Phil's dad loved Jimmy's choice of Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight," and Iovine dared the pawn shop worker to ignore the 1978 hit's melody. Without his guitar, Phil was forced to awkwardly stroke and caress his thigh as he muscled through the heartland ballad. Between the sappy strings and the suggesting hand fidgeting Phillips looked like he was waiting out the clock in detention. Randy, of course, called it the "perfect song" and Phil's best performance. So, now all you have to do to win this thing is sing the melody of the song and not worry about actually hitting the notes correctly? I give up. You can have him, America. Remember how awesome that nighty-night song was when you don't buy his album in December. B

Jessica Sanchez: Lopez aimed for Sanchez's sweet spot with Mariah Carey's "My All," but ended up trapping the singer in a breathy lower register that made Jessica's powerhouse voice sound weak and pitchy. The snoozy lullaby robbed the high schooler of a big moment and may have punched her card home. Did Randy mention he's worked with Mariah? Well, if he thought that was one of the best renditions of a Carey song ever on TV, Carey should lose his number.

In the ultimate brown noser move, BeBe chose Aerosmith's power anthem "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing." I kept waiting for girls in swimsuits or evening gowns to start parading around her, but this kind of Velveeta ballad is her sweet spot and while she didn't move the bar any higher, it's exactly what America wanted to hear. But, ugh, that last shouty note was as off as Jennifer's pink pantsuit.

Iovine went retro with 1970's "I'll Be There" by the Jackson 5, which despite what he argued, didn't really make Sanchez seem contemporary, and dropped her back down into that lower range that doesn't do her favors. When she kept it up high, Sanchez sounded strong and confident, but the lazy tempo didn't provide the rocket fuel she needed to lock in a spot next week. B-

Who do you think nailed it last night? Who deserves to go home? Let us know in comments below.

[Smells Like News] Kanye West, Kim Kardashian Tease Romance In New 'Keeping Up' Trailer

'Kanye and Kim, they're kind of like two peas in a pod,' Khloe Kardashian says in clip for 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians.'
By Jocelyn Vena

"Kanye and Kim, they're kind of like two peas in a pod," little sister Khloe Kardashian says about Kim's romance with Kanye West in a "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" teaser. While not much footage of Kim and Yeezy made it into the clip, the little bit that did will certainly spark interest in Sunday's season premiere of the E! reality show. As Khloe narrates her feelings about the twosome, the trailer cuts to them sitting together, dressed all in black and sharing a laugh.

Kimye isn't the only headline that made the jam-packed show trailer. Kourtney reveals to her family that she's having a baby girl, the family goes on a drama-filled vacation to the Dominican Republic and Lamar Odom ponders his basketball-playing future, telling in-laws Bruce and Kris Jenner, "I know that I can make any team a championship-caliber team. I got to just get back."

And, yes, the infamous red-carpet flour-bombing also makes the cut. Toward the end of the teaser, mama Kris proclaims, "I left my husband for this guy," as footage of her hugging a mysterious man is teased. A teary-eyed Kourtney says, "I don't understand. I could never do that to my children." However, it is unclear what exactly will play out.

When MTV News caught up with Kim and Khloe, the eldest Kardashian sister noted that she wanted to keep as much of her relationship with West as private as possible. "I don't know if I'm ready to talk about him," Kim said. "I feel like I've had such a hard time sharing my love life that now I'm a little bit more reserved on that."

While Kim was tight-lipped about her man, Khloe teased her sister a bit about the romance. "No I love, it. You're like a wild, crowd-surfing child and I love you."

On Wednesday, Kim and Kanye were spotted in London, where Kim will launch her jewelry line. According to E!, the twosome touched down to lots of paparazzi. Kim will be doing some press while in town, including radio and TV appearances.

[Smells Like News] Nero Look Forward To Playing Alongside 'Massive Artists' At EDC

U.K.-based EDM group set to headline Electric Daisy Carnival New York's Bassrush Stage this Sunday.

When MTV News first caught up with Dan Stephens, co-producer of U.K.-based electronic dance music outfit Nero (with co-producer Joseph Ray), and frequent vocal collaborator Alana Watson, last December, it was at the launch of the music video for "Reaching Out."

The song is the fifth single from their debut album, Welcome Reality, and features original vocals by Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates fame, who recorded pieces of the Hall & Oates '80s hit song "Out of Touch." Nero's other singles from the album, "Crush On You," "Promises," and "Must Be the Feeling," garnered remixes from the likes of Kill the Noise, Skrillex, Flux Pavilion and Calvin Harris, to name a few.

Since then, Nero have been tirelessly touring the U.S. and U.K in support of the album, playing to frenzied fans who often even drown out Watson's live vocals. It's safe to say that the often bass-heavy EDM collective are more popular in the U.S. than ever before.

"We've literally just come off of a three-month tour of the U.K. and the U.S., and that was amazing," Stephens revealed when MTV News caught up with him at EDM mecca XS Nightclub Las Vegas. "We love playing here. Everywhere you go at the moment in the States, people are just going crazy for electronic music. We just feel so very privileged to be doing this, and traveling around to all these amazing places in America. And people are coming and loving what we are doing so it's great for us."

After their highly successful North American tour and gigs at XS, Nero is set to join the ranks of Steve Angello, Calvin Harris, Avicii, Bassnectar, Chuckie, Borgore, Sub Focus, Thomas Gold and Armin Van Buuren, among many others, performing at Insomniac Events and Pacha NYC's Electric Daisy Carnival New York this weekend.

"Really looking forward to it," Stephens continued. "I mean EDC, they are always really great shows. You're playing alongside massive artists who are doing similar things, electronic artists, so it's going to be great!"

So will fans at EDC NY this weekend get a chance to preview fresh, new material? Stephens said yes, sort of, though, it's probably too early for them to reveal new cuts from their next album.

"We wrote our album quite a while ago," Stephens said. "And we are working on new material now for the next album, but there's nothing that's ready to play just yet of our next album's material."

"But we've done a few things to play out," he continued, "stuff that isn't going to be album material. Just basically big dance-floor tunes. A couple of bootlegs. So there is new stuff that we are playing and its going to be exciting to play it. Some of the stuff we've only just finished too, so it's going to be good to gauge the crowd's reaction."

Head to the EDC website for a complete list of performers at this weekend's Electric Daisy Carnival New York.
